In May 2004, when we began the foster care journey, we had no idea what we were signing up for. The agency that provided our licensing training was great, but they did everything by the state-mandated book. And the book was severely lacking.

We remember sitting in training for 3 full days, learning about laws, home requirements, CPR protocols, and more. But after it was over, we felt ill-equipped. No one told us about the deep levels of trauma the children we would care had likely experienced. Nor did they teach us how trauma histories could greatly impact present behavior, or even how to effectively respond to it. 

It took us years of discovery, education and research, before we learned what was really happening with our children, and how to respond to them differently. Now, we, in no way, blamed the agency. They were simply doing what they were instructed to do. But, they lacked the resources to adequately prepare families for the real journey ahead.
